Best Performing Stocks of 2016

Now that 2017 is in full swing, people are looking forward to this coming year, including the investment industry. Which stocks will be the big winners this year and which ones will leave investors shaking their heads? There is a lot still up in the air, especially with all the political turmoil surrounding the new presidential administration and the great divide in our country. However, the stock market so far has seen positive signs despite the political unrest. In any case, let’s look back at 2016 to maybe get a glimpse of what 2017 might hold as well. According to Fortune 500, these were the top seven stocks from last year:

Number 1: AK Steel Holding

Coming in as the number one stock on Fortune 500’s list of best stocks of 2016, with a 359 percent increase, is yet another steel company: AK Steel Holding, which also saw significant gains thanks to the increase in steel prices. And, just like United States Steel and Steel Dynamics, AK also benefited from Trump’s victory, rising 74 percent since the November 8 election. Trump has also expressed a desire to use steel in more infrastructure projects going forward and to implement trade policies that make domestic steel more attractive.

Number 2: United States Steel

Coming in at number 244 on the Fortune 500 list, United States Steel, like Steel Dynamics, saw a big increase this year, as investors received a 332 percent return on their investment in 2016. Thanks to the big tick up in steel prices, U.S. Steel benefited throughout the year, only to see an additional increase after president Trump won the election. The good news doesn’t stop there, either. As our country continues to decrease the amount of steel it imports from China, United States Steel is likely to benefit even more, which should send it’s value up still further.

Number 3: Navistar International

Diesel engine and truck maker Navistar International saw huge returns this year, after a tough 2015 when the stock declined 74 percent. But 2016 was a different story as investors saw their purchase pay off, with an increase of 236 percent.

Number 4: Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac

This natural gas and pipeline company earned its investors a 135.6 percent return in 2016 thanks to an increase in natural gas prices last year.

Number 5: Oneok

This natural gas and pipeline company earned its investors a 135.6 percent return in 2016 thanks to an increase in natural gas prices last year.

Number 6: Freeport-McMoRan

The mining company saw a 106 percent return this year with an increase in prices of precious metals, including gold, silver and copper. Copper benefited from an additional uptick thanks to a Trump victory as investors expect copper to play a larger role in the new administration’s expected infrastructure.

Number 7: Steel Dynamics

Ranked number 356 on the Fortune 500 list, Steel Dynamics saw a 100 percent return on investment in 2016. The company avoided a large decline from last year’s price and was able to stay profitable and create a strong cash flow.

The American Dreams show was the brainchild of Alan Olsen, CPA, MBA. It was originally created to fill a specific need; often inexperienced entrepreneurs lacked basic information about raising capital and how to successfully start a business.

Alan sincerely wanted to respond to the many requests from aspiring entrepreneurs asking for the information and introductions they needed. But he had to find a way to help in which his venture capital clients and friends would not mind.

The American Dreams show became the solution, first as a radio show and now with YouTube videos as well. Always respectful of interview guest’s time, he’s able to give access to individuals information and inspiration previously inaccessible to the first-time entrepreneurs who need it most.

They can listen to venture capitalists and successful business people explain first-hand, how they got to where they are, how to start a company, how to overcome challenges, how they see the future evolving, opportunities, work-life balance and so much more..

American Dreams discusses many topics from some of the world’s most successful individuals about their secrets to life’s success. Topics from guest have included:
