Alan Olsen: I’m visiting here today with Martin Frey, he’s a Guinness world record holder and, and also in individually has a passion for working with the youth and getting them off the internet and doing things in life. Welcome to today’s show. Thank you glad to be here. So Martin know, first of all, the Guinness World Record, give us a little background of what she did and how you got there.
Martin Frey: Well, I basically got 27 hula hoops and did a half hour dance. No, I’m like, I, I was the first person to climb the Seven Summits, which is the tallest mountain on each continent, and sail the seven seas, and to have done all that together and got a nice recognition or on the Today Show in New York,
Alan Olsen: What inspired you to do that, that that’s a lot of work.
Martin Frey: It was a lot of work. But it wasn’t a big life goal. It just unfolded, I moved to Utah from the Bay Area and started climbing mountains, because that’s mountains are very prominent Utah and kept looking for a bigger challenge. And then we have a disabled daughter and the opportunity to take her on an adventure. That was still challenging for me. And we ended up sailing, and we sailed across the South Pacific and then kept going around the world and then kept going.
Alan Olsen: When you when you went on this adventure, was it known from the outset, that you wanted to do the seven seas, the seven peaks?
Martin Frey: It just kind of unfolded? It sounded good. I had kind of this inkling that we could but at the same time, I was trying to be realistic and not stretch beyond what I could successfully accomplish. The first goal was to get my, my wife and daughter through nine months in the South Pacific. Have we had a success there, I said, hey, let’s continue around the world. And then I started look looking at Antarctica and the Arctic Ocean and said, I may have to try those. And we kept going.
Alan Olsen: Now I understand that you use the seven seas and the seven peaks to motivate youth.
Martin Frey: Yeah. So the mountains are a great analogy for stepping outside of your comfort zone, challenging yourself to take on a bigger challenge in life and to move up that mountain or your summit journey, whatever that may be. And we help people identify that, and then realize they can achieve a whole lot more than they thought they could and to push them and encourage them and support them to really make that forward progress. The oceans are a great analogy for navigating your way through life and following a course that you’ve mapped out. Some people are a drift, they don’t really know where their aspirational goals are. And to get them making more headway and maybe getting them first to shore. And then we get them on that summit journey in their life and moving forward.
Alan Olsen: How do you reach the youth? Can add this to seminars or? Yeah, in
Martin Frey: Yeah, in the last two and a half years, I’ve spoken to about 300,000 young people, it’s been a great opportunity, a great honor. And so I’ve inspired them, and now we’re following that up. With programs. We partnered with the YMCA, we partnered with the foster care programs in Utah, we are partnering with the Boys and Girls Clubs, and providing the outdoor experiences for them to take their participants in a more challenging outdoor environment. What age group are you? We we have to we sort of do age 12 to 17. And then we do age 18 to 26. And then I take CEOs and other celebrities and everybody at con these outdoor adventures to help fund some of the youth programs, which is kind of fun as well.
Alan Olsen: So the geographic regions is primarily Utah but you have How far is your outreach?
Martin Frey: Yeah, that’s a good question. Speaking wise and global I’ll be in speaking in Germany in a couple of weeks. But the opportunity to really touch the US starts around our base of operations mostly in Utah at the moment.
Alan Olsen: But how does a person find more information on your on your program?
Martin Frey: Right so you can go to summitjourneys.org is our website and then my own website is 7Summits7seas.org.
