I’m visiting here today with Hope Tian. Hope, welcome to today’s show.

Hope

Thank you, thank you for inviting me Alan, its really a pleasure being here.

Alan

So Hope like I’ve come to know you through mutual friendships. And also I’ve attended some your podcasts on art and you are a very accomplished artist. So I want to ask though, when did you first start getting involved in art,

Hope

Ever since I was a really young age, I always liked to draw. I would draw everywhere, in the margins of my textbooks, on the walls and sometimes it would get  me trouble.  I first started painting almost 10 years ago. I painted a piece for my son’s, birthday.  I wanted to give him something special. I didn’t have no any knowledge about anything, I just grabbed some brushes and colors I thought he might like. Back then he really liked elephants, so I searched online and got a photo of a mother elephant and baby African elephant and painted them. Since then, I’ve never stopped painting.

Alan

Could you walk me through the process you go through to put a piece on canvas?,

Hope

It come from inspiration around me. I’ll see something beautiful, or listen to music or the  news. But it all comes from the heart-  and is something I really want to express at the times.

Alan

Could you tell is a little about your painting, The Pre-existence of Souls?

Hope

This is one of my earlier paintings which I finished in 2013. You can see it is more of a darker theme and the surface is smooth. Here I focused on the eyes. This painting actually took a longer time, but in doing so helped me come up with the name: Pre-existence of Souls. When I painted this horse, I had searched online to look for pictures of different horses and visited a barn in my in my town to make some sketches. But I’m more focused on horse’s eyes. So during the paintings I felt like a connection- I just suddenly felt like all creatures in the world- in the universe are created by a spiritual being. So from that moment in focusing on the horse’s eyes, I felt a connection- I can feel the spirits and that is just the inspiration for me.

Alan

Very special yeah being able to as an artist to convey the field is the spiritual connection to what you’re putting in on canvas and you can pick that up as you look at the faces and you can actually see emotion within the horses and the different lighting the different colors I love I love once you capture here hope on this next painting here titled, A Winter Night in Boston, can you walk through what you were feeling and what you’re trying to portray, there’s a picture two buildings on each side. lamp posts and individual walking

Hope

This is actually a painting of Beason Hill Street in Boston.  And I remember particularly in that night. My family visited a friend and took a walk around town. And in that moment, it just feel warm. And you can see I started from actually from portrait painting at my earliest date to more landscape and cityscapes. So and this is just a normal daily life. So I like to capture that moment. And then that made me just feel like even though it’s the inventor, but you can see from the warm yellow tone is from I felt visiting with my family. This piece was actually also influenced at that period of time when I felt God is my favorite master for the post impressionist. So this painting is really influenced by God’s painting called the Paris at nightscape. The painting itself the color itself also the little bit the compensation is all you can see the influence.

Alan

This painting is called Meadow Meandering, can you tell us about the inspiration behind the painting and what you were capturing here. There are a lot of beautiful colors of flowers and trees.

Hope

I actually that that painting is actually from a family visit- it’s actually it’s a scenery Meadow Memorial Park in the city. So when my family visited there and when I saw this beautiful, beautiful scenery and that moment, I just felt like the Mother Nature is so great. Mother nature is the perfect artwork. And then that reminds me how lucky how much privilege we have to live in the world the spirit created for us. So it just feel like me to be at the moment me to capture the moment live at present and capture the beauty at moment. So that is just from the bottom of my heart, I feel I’m lucky and blessed. And that’s where the painting came from.

Alan

As you look into the scenery there with the different colors and the different flowers and people are in the background enjoying the metals walking and strolling. You really did a very, very nice job with this. So Hope if somebody saw your paintings on the gallery wall, how would they know that it is a Hope Tian painting?

Hope

What make me feel the happiest is when people tell me, “Hope, I feel the painting and the painting makes me feel.” And at that moment I feel, that the painting really resonates with their emotion and the painting really invokes the emotions they carried inside them over the years. Some people said, ‘that just reminded me of my childhood,’ and that’s atmosphere. And that moment I feel like this is the power of art and the impact of art on people and that makes me feel really really happy.

Alan

Well, you are a I have to say having known you have a lot of happiness inside of you and I also feel that as I’ve looked at your art and studied your art. I see a lot of that happiness come out inside of your paintings and I do feel those emotions and I say that, Hope it’s an honor to know you
